The President's Column

January 2025
Welcome to 2025! As we prepare for the year ahead, one theme keeps repeating in many areas of our business: We are in a dynamic environment. Things are changing, not always in the way we would choose. That makes keeping our heads above water in the churning seas difficult. Being a part of an Association, whose goal is to keep its members informed and effect change whenever possible is more critical than ever. Our leadership: staff, board members, committee members, and chapter presidents are working to ensure that the California Moving and Storage Association (CMSA) remains an important resource for our membership.
In late December I traveled to Sacramento to meet with senior staff of the Bureau of Household Goods and Services (BHGS). Bureau Chief Justin Paddock had announced his decision to leave state service the preceding week and we both thought it was important to have a final meeting to complete a few projects and to effect a smooth transition. Justin’s leadership of the Bureau has been exemplary, supporting consumer protection while understanding the importance of a viable regulated community. Consumers cannot be protected in an environment where movers do not have the ability to be financially viable. Something I wish the Department of Defense (DoD) understood. Thank you, Chief Paddock, for your service and willingness to work with CMSA for the betterment of Consumers and Industry.
Deputy Bureau Chief Claire Goldstene, effective January 1, 2025, Acting Chief was also a part of our meeting as was Licensing Manager Jacqueline Castro. Both Claire and Jacqueline understand and value our professional relationship and I am confident that we continue on the positive path that started with the initial transition from the California Public Utilities Commission (CPUC) to the Department of Consumer Affairs (DCA).
Now that BHGS has implemented the IT program, CONNECT, to allow permit holders to report and pay their quarterlies online, they can focus on those who for numerous reasons have fallen into delinquency in this process. Communications will be going out to permittees who have fallen behind, giving them 45 days to report and pay any outstanding balances. If you feel you are receiving notice in error, please do not ignore it and contact BHGS to correct it. If issues arise, please contact the CMSA.
There are several upcoming events that I would bring to your attention. Chapter meetings as well as Fundraisers in support of our scholarship program, and a legislative day in Sacramento. These and other events are listed on our website in the calendar of events. Now is the time to register for the 2025 CMSA Convention in beautiful Lake Tahoe, our annual convention is always an event not to be missed. Early registration is needed to help us with the evermore challenging hotel event process.
